Bird species in the Kildeer Nature Center include the horned owl, the red winged blackbird, the sparrow hawk, the Scarlet Tanger and the red-winged woodpecker. Of course, one other bird species occupies the largest percent of the tranquil habitat inside the Nature Center. That one species is the Kildeer, the bird for which the town was named. In the springtime, the Kildeer build their nests along the grass-covered ground of the Kildeer Nature Center. With so many nests in the Center, it then becomes almost impossible for any Center visitor to avoid getting close to a single such nest. When that happens, when a Center visitor approaches a Kildeer nest, then the mother suddenly puts on an act. She pretends to be sick or injured in an attempt to draw the attention of whoever has ventured close to her nest. The mother Kildeer strives valiantly to protect her young.
